Aylan’s family was reportedly attempting to flee the Syrian city of Kobani with other refugees, when their boat capsized. His brother Galip's body was also found on the same shore.

Pattnaik posted an image of the sculpture to his Facebook page, captioned, "#HumanityWashedAshore My Homage to the Syrian boy #AylanKurdi through my sand sculpture at Puri beach, in Odisha, India."
